The medical cost of a loved one particurlarly with Alzheimer’s is astronomical in the United States. I am discovering more and more people struggling due to the extremely high fees. It’s really sad that the individuals who worked the bulk of their lives, lose their mental capacity, now have their families punished in an effort to look after them. The trouble is that many people have to put their husband or wife in a facility. A woman I spoke to the other day who is struggling financially due to the medical costs of keeping her husband in a care unit can’t take care of him herself as he tried to strangle her. Another man I know whose wife is gone from the disease is unable to take care of her and now needs to work extra just to afford the fees. It shouldn’t be this way. These people were productive citizens and now they barely function. I know of a son who does have a twenty-four hour caretaker for his father as he often would just take a walk and disappear. It is a struggle for all families. I know there is research, but is it enough? Type I diabetes is a gold mine for the pharmaceutical companies and of course, there is still no cure.
