Why do prospective brides choose the ugliest bridesmaid dresses for their bridesmaids? Shouldn’t they look nice? I saw an old episode of “Aurora Teagarden Mysteries” yesterday. Both Aurora and her mother were selected to be bridesmaids at a relative’s wedding. The dresses were hideous. They were a bright pink with huge sleeves and a wide skirt. Aurora, as pretty as she is, looked awful. Her friend Sally thought it was so funny that she took a few photos much to Aurora’s chagrin. Eventually, Sally showed the pictures to Aurora’s future boyfriend Martin. The fact that the bride goes out of her way to find unflattering dresses is a foolish idea and even tradition. Everyone should look nice. No matter what the bride will stand out. She is the main attraction and her dress is always gorgeous. In “The Big Bang Theory” Penny and Bernadette had nice dresses that were flattering to their physiques. Amy wanted them to look nice. There have been movies about women who were always a bridesmaid but never a bride. Their closets were full of ugly dresses that probably were expensive. I think being the center of attention is enough. The whole event is about the bride and groom. How everyone else looks and dresses is immaterial. Wearing flattring clothes should always be a priority. Everyone wants to look attractive. None of us care to wear an ugly dress, even for only one day, that makes us look foolish. The pink dresses in the TV show truly outdid themselves. Whomever the wardrobe person was did an outstanding job to make sure they were the worst dresses. It makes me wonder if he or she had to really do some retail scouting. When my children were married I went out of my way to find a really nice dress. My daughter’s bridesmaids wore very nice flattering dresses that could have been used again for a special occasion. How do you feel about the ugly bridesmaids dresses tradition?
