When I was younger our school had dances and the city next to where I lived had public dances. At the school dances the attendance was only those students who attended the school unless they brought a date. They were small and of course on Mondays everyone would be talking about it. The city dances were huge. I went to one once and I was overwhelmed. The Irish love dancing. You can go into Dublin City Center and you will see many street performers including dancers. We all learned how to dance at home. However, Arthur Murray came along and suddenly everyone was learning new dances. There were also recording artists who developed songs with a new style of dance such as the twist, mashed potato, the locomotion, etc. just to name a few. Girls took dance lessons but there were ballet, tap, and jazz. They were fine except they had no value if you wished to dance with a boy. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers were outstanding. He was fluid as he tapped his way into everyone’s hearts. Sometimes Facebook will show short skits of him dancing alone and with Ginger. They were great. You just don’t see that type of movement much anymore. Line dancing is quite popular and you can also catch short videos on Facebook. I think dancing gives people a sense of relaxation, pride and enjoyment. As parents we always danced with our children to songs on “Sesame Street”, “The Cat in the Hat,” “Snoopy,” and many Disney tunes. I always enjoyed it. I will say that as time went on classic dancing disappeared almost entirely. There are still people who do basic ballroom dancing and even clubs. I think it’s great.
