Education

Recently several states in the United States have lowered their educational standards,  This is shocking. For example, in Oregon a student does not need to be proficient in math, reading and writing to receive a high school diploma. This program will remain in effect until 2029. How are graduates supposed to succeed without even a basic education? What types of jobs can they possibly be hired for?  You need skills no matter what type of employment you obtain.  Even the basics are important but apparently the state of Oregon doesn’t believe so.  What is sad is that they are not the only state in America doing this. What is even more surprising is that the state of Ohio dropped math proficiency in 2010.  How can you pass a driving test without a basic knowledge of math?  Various districts in California, New York, Michigan, South Carolina and the schools in the City of Baltimore have also lowered their standards. All these areas claim it has not made any difference whatsoever. Of course it hasn’t as they were not teaching the students to begin with.  Now they simply made it official. I thought the point of a good education was to help students grow and achieve success within their lives, not be failures.  These politicians do not care which is quite depressing. When we went to school if we did not pass we had to repeat the year or go to summer school.  Either way it was extremely important that we knew the basics plus more. One year I failed science.  I ended up going to summer school and just barely passed but I did and moved to the next year.  Science was never my strong suit.  The schooling in many states still remains strong as it does in Europe.  It is important to learn and be educated.  Do you feel a solid education is important? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
