Guilty Conscience

Many people have a guilty conscience.  It starts when we were young.  If we were caught doing something we were not supposed to, our parents not only punished us but if it took time for us to admit it they applied guilt so that we would. This also worked in school and college.  Let’s not leave out dating.  Often both men and women use a guilty conscience to obtain what they want.  It could be money, a gift, a concert, a fancy dinner or almost anything.  When we look at the behavior of individuals both publicly and privately, it is almost a daily occurance. For example last month I wrote about a couple in northern California whose son took their home and evicted them. He did not appear to have any remorse. A client in the office had a similar occurance.  She was a widow who had paid off her home.  It was in  a trust that her son had access to.  While she was out of town, he transferred the home to his name, then changed his name and did another deed giving it to himself and his wife.  Before his mother could return, he put the home up for sale and removed the items he felt like and put them in storage for her.  He basically made her homeless and penniless because she had hidden certain assets which he confiscated. Then to assauge his guilty conscience he claimed she was a criminal and dangerous.  Neat trick considering she held two Secret clearances.  Unfortunately, due to the way everything was set up the mother couldn’t sue him.  She does have a few other ideas that she is talking to attorneys about who does not handle estate plans. The individuals with a guilty conscience can be manipulated and blackmailed which is what the son believes he is doing.  People do many things because of guilt. Men and women who cheat on their partners tend to be kinder until they decide they no longer want them in their lives. I often wonder if bullies and narcissists have guilt, what do you think?
