Health Foods

Long before it was popular, my late husband and I were buying health foods. When we lived in the city we would go to a small shop that sold large quantities of organic flour. At that time I made homemade bread without a mixer. Now I cheat! I would travel about twenty minutes when we lived in suburbia when my children were little to buy farm fresh produce and as much organic as possilbe. At that time organic products were only sold at specialty stores. Of course, now various groceries sell a certain amount of organic products.  They aren’t just sold in health food stores anymore. When my children were little, their friends and parents all knew I cooked everyday. One time while waiting for a new stove, I was asked to make cupcakes for one of their classes. Without an oven I did the next best thing. I baked them a few at a time in a toaster over. It worked and the teacher appreciated it and loved them. My baking is handy for a variety of reasons. My daughter ends up with excellent pricing when she goes to her automechanic for repairs.  He loves my blueberry and apple muffins. Sometimes she will just drop a few off as he is is considerate to her. We did have a man mowing for baked goods. However, his mower gave out and now he is dating a woman who does not want him to receive anything from me.  Seriously, the man is younger than me and I have not and never will date him. Another time our neighbor up the street when we lived in suburbia was in the military. Both he and his wife were called away for a week so their son stayed with us. He brought his own forms of junk food. When my son saw it he told him to put it away as I made real food for breakfast and would make lunch for him to take to school. At that time there were no cafeterias. At first he hesitated, then he ate and completely changed his mind. His dad was very grateful.  Not everyone knows or understands about health foods, but they really should don’t you agree? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
