Pesticides have been around for decades. When I was a girl they used DDT and my late friend Julia and I ate mulberries probably filled with them. Today, though we know better. There is a list of the dirty dozen of foods that have the most pesticides starting with strawberries. We all ate strawberries before organic was even remotely popular. When my children were young I would drive almost thirty minutes to buy anything available that was organic. The other foods that are on the list are: spinach, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, nectarines, apples, grapes,bell peppers and hot peppers, cherries, peaches, pears, celery and tomatoes. In the 1970’s the leftover hippies started co-ops. I would purchase fifty pounds of organic flour or approximately 22.68 kilograms. I would make bread by hand, but now I cheat and use a machine. Today, it is more important to try and buy organic as it is less costly than having healthcare issues. When my children were young we grew berries on land we owned that had a couple of acres. Our neighbor had rows of blackberries that he let us pick for free and my children sold them at the end of our street. They were organic! I also used to subscribe to an organic gardening magazine. I still remember them recommending beer as a natural pesticide for apples. In the Good Gus series there were pesticides in the late 1800’s but they were all natural.
