There is an old phrase that some people have substance and some have style. Rarely do people have both. Many people have a great deal of style and it is evident in they they treat others. In other words, they put on a fabulous show of really caring, pretending to you that they will be there when and if you ever need them, and in general act as if they are a real friend. Then when the chips are down, they are no where to be found. Suddenly, they are too busy, and are unwilling to help. If you lose your job, they won’t even speak to you and possibly give you a little guidance on your CV or resume. If they know if there are any positions that you might be qualified for they will not let make you aware of them, but rather pass it on to their other phony friends. If your finances go awry because of health or a family emergency, they won’t even pop around and give you a few groceries to tide you over. Yet, once you land back on your feet and may be of use to them, they have more excuses than you can bear to listen to as to why they weren’t available for you. The substance type of individual doesn’t even need to be asked. They may help with your CV/resume or pay for a service so that they can tailor your work experience to help you secure a new position quickly. They may drop by as a friend and lend a hand with groceries, clean your home, or take a sick relative to the doctor. They are the true friends and people of substance. They are the individuals that you know you can always count on who will not let you down. The best part about individuals with substance is that they can always be counted on in times of need. Anyone who has a friend like that should cherish and appreciate them. They should also let them know every once in a while how important they are and how much you appreciate them as a real friend. In the Good Gus Series, the citizens of Pecos, including Sheriff Gus, are all people of substance. The stories reflect this which gives valuable lessons to the young readers.
