Childs_Straight_A_Report_Card_Royalty_Free_Clipart_Picture_081220-004774-470042report cardWhen we started school, we were first exposed to the grading system. The report card was everything. When I was in school the grading system was based on your abilities. Sometimes I believe the teachers gave slightly better grades because you put forth the effort. I also think that if they didn’t like you, it was reflected in your report card. Movies and TV shows have had plots with children in fear of bad grades on their report cards. I was surprised in elementary school, when my daughter received¬† lower grades on her report card even though she did very well in school. Her friend, who was classed as a minority, whom my daughter continually tutored, received higher grades. I later learned that the grading system was different and based upon ethnicity. As children moved onto high school, it was not only all about the report card but the SAT’s. There has been much debate over the years about the grading systems in schools everywhere. The SAT’s have endured much controversy. It was discussed in the news, school debates, Parent Teacher Meeting, etc. about the validity of the SAT’s. It was felt many years ago that the SAT’s were geared to middle class, private school students. Any young adult who wasn’t in that category failed the SAT’s. There was constant discussion that the grading system had to be modified to be applicable to all students whether rich or poor, and tests that the average student could pass regardless of their background. It is my opinion that if you are going to require SAT’s for college, make them available to everyone and ensure that the tests are based on the high school education of all. It is up to the student whether they pass or fail based on their studying efforts. In the old west there were not SAT’s.¬† If you had the money and ability, you were able to attend a school of higher learning.¬† I hope as you consider an Easter gift for the child or children in your life, you will choose a book from the Good Gus Series.
