Trying to do school workTry harder baseballHow many times have you heard if you just try harder it will work out?  When we were young we must have heard that hundreds of times, no exaggeration.  I know I have said to my own children when they were younger, “Well just try harder.”  Sometimes we do try harder but it still doesn’t work out.  There can be circumstances that impede our success and no matter how hard we try, it still doesn’t work out.  People who are always trying to do the right thing, accomplish goals, finish their work, lose weight, quit smoking, etc.sometimes fail.  In their efforts to try harder, its not always easy to succeed.  Children believe that if they try harder they will succeed.  Its an excellent idea and there are many people who started with absolutely nothing, who have succeeded personally and financially.  Avis became number one in the car rental business, replacing Hertz, by their advertising slogan, “We try harder.”  That is a perfect example of trying harder paying off in sales increases, stock dividends and probably increases in pay for their employees.  I haven’t heard that slogan for a long time, but it really did work.  Trying harder also applies to sports.  When we were younger, we probably tried to be the best with a great deal of effort. Today, all the teams, whatever sport it might be, try harder to win the big prize whether it is the World Series, the Stanley Cup, or the Super Bowl.  In the Good Gus Series, the children play sports without supervision from adults.  In book twenty, “The Flying Cat,” the children of Pecos are playing baseball when a cat interferes.  They solve the problem with the help of the adults.  As you look for new reading material for the up coming year, I hope you will choose a book from the Good Gus Series.
