The Right Words

The Special Gift

In an event, often that is tragic, people will say, ” I do not know the right words to say.” Individuals will say that at wakes or funerals.  Saying you are sad and sorry for their loss would be a start.  When my grandfather passed, because I was a teenager I was treated poorly except by his sister.  I was devastated and crying at the wake first then at the funeral.  Everyone was embarrassed by me but the truth was I truly loved him so this was not an easy ordeal.  Fortunately, his sister, Helen, took me under her wing and helped me get through it.  This also occurred when my aunt Helen passed.  I had to fly out from the west coast. She was my last older relative.  I spoke to her every week and had visited her when I could as she lived in the Northeast of this country. My cousin’s niece this time helped me through it.  She was very kind.  The right words sometimes do not come easily.  For example, a friend is wearing an outfit that is not flattering but she believes it is marvelous. You can be careful in your phraseology by simply saying that it is so wonderful she has an outfit she is happy with.  It completely gets you off the proverbial hook! In the Good Gus series, the right words were simply a matter of form. My Aunt Helen my grandfather’s sister are in my third Christmas books as one character. The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
