Tall Tale

Have you ever noticed how a small story  suddenly changes as each person modifies it and before long it is a tall tale? With each person it expands into something bordering on outrageous. Here is a story from “Leave it to Beaver.”  One day Wally and the Beaver were fishing and Beaver saw a canoe floating on the lake. He went into the water to retrieve it.  At first, because it was him, he was sure it belonged to a tribe.  Wally assured him that it did not because this canoe was made of plastic. The Beave brought it up to shore.  While he was trying to figure out who the owner might be a man came along.  He thanked him for bringing the canoe ashore.  He said his daughter did not tie it tightly to the dock.  He promised the Beaver a big reward.  The next day when he told a friend at school  his story, he was impressed. By the time the story went around the class and to the teacher it had turned into a tall tale.  It went from a canoe to a speed boat, rescuing the daughter and more. When their teacher heard this amazing tall tale she asked the Beaver to explain.  He went back to his original story.  This is a psychological occurance we have all read about and heard before. Each person tends to exaggerate the story to make it more interesting. How often have you heard stories from your childhood from family members that turn into a tall tale?  The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
