What would you call a peson when they use their child for their opinion for Hollywood scripts? In the 1930’s and part of the 1940’s it was a common practice. I saw an old “Jeeves and Wooster” recently where a Hollywood script writer used his son for evaluation. Jeeves the Valet had to provide food as this was a friend of Bertie Wooster’s who was auditioning his script. On that particular day, Bertie had to leave but he had his Aunt Agatha’s dog which was an aberdeen terrier. Of course, the dog was very friendly and the boy liked him immediately. The dog’s name was MacIntosh. The boy was so taken with the dog that he demanded from his father that he have it immediately. Of course, Bertie’s friend who was anxious for his script to be sold willingly agreed. When Bertie returned he was extremely upset. His Aunt Agatha was not the most pleasantest person. She would have really been upset with Bertie for giving her dog away. Bertie tried to go to their hotel and reason with the father and the boy but to no avail. Bertie was beside himself. What was he going to do? Jeeves, of course, saved the day. He used one of Bertie’s friends’ and purchased a duplicate aberdeen terrier. Then through a quick scheme he switched the dog. No one was the wiser. When Aunt Agatha called there was her precious MacIntosh and all was well. The old Hollywood script writers along with directors used people and often bullied them to get what they wanted if a person wanted a job strong enough. Thank heavens this routine has changed.
