When I hear the words cold turkey I think of American Thanksgiving and the leftovers which I love. My son and I did American Thanksgiving in Ireland and everyone came. It was a great time. However, cold turkey has another connotation. It usually means a person is quiting smoking, drugs, alcohol, pills, gambling, fast food, junk food or some other habit. Quitting anything takes a real effort. It is difficult for many people. Often individuals use alternatives to help them get past the difficult symptoms and trauma. It is not easy. There are all types of programs. Many work but some only prolong the addiction whatever it might be. Going cold turkey for even giving up video games must be quite difficult. They are advertised everywhere and most people over the age of six play and continue to play into adulthood. It is a mental break but is it necessary? Many of the games are violent. They also project a certain type of behavior particularly for young children that is reality inappropriate. With everything revolving around electronics, it is very difficult to go back to simply reading a book, playing a board game with another person or even trying not to constatnly check your phone. There is a movie entitled “The Queen’s Gambit” about an adopted girl who learned how to play chess from a janitor at the adoption home. Once she was adopted she started entering tournaments for chess. Her adopted mother really loved her but the father didn’t want anything to do with her and simply left. She had a wonderful time both playing and with her mother. It was a good skill other than at time in the 1950’s and 1960’s focusing on TV. Back then cartoons and Saturday movies were the rage. Kids watched cartoons every Saturday and if allowed went to the movies for an entire afternoon. It was the very beginning of things to come with technology. However, going cold turkey for anything you decide to give up is a choice. Have you ever gone cold turkey? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
