Too Much Pride

People who have too much pride never seem to let anything go.  They must always be right.  I remembered an episode of “Leave it to Beaver” in which Ward clearly had too much pride.  When the Beaver and his friend Larry Mondello were fooling in the garage they decided to play with Ward’s tools.  Of course, they messed up and put a couple of holes in the garage wall.  When Ward discovered the damage he was furious. Beaver admitted that he and Larry were playing with his tools and that it was an accident.  One thing led to another and Beaver said that since his father was so unhappy with him he would run away from home.  He went to his room packed a small pillowcase and quietly left. Later in the day June, the mother, told her other son, Wally to find the Beaver for lunch. That is when they realized he had left. June was livid with Ward and wouldn’t even speak to him. She demanded that he take the car and look for him. Ward refused. So June and Wally drove up and down the entire neighborhood. They couldn’t find him. She was really upset. What they didn’t know was that the Beave had run away to Larry’s house and made up a story about his aunt being in the hospital. He had a nice dinner with Larry and his Mum as his dad had to work late. Finally, after dinner Mrs. Mondello called the Cleaver residence and that is when they realized where he was. Again Ward refused to go collect him. When June and the Beaver returned home, The Beave apologized to his father again about the holes. He then asked him how he felt when he told his father he was going to run away and he didn’t stop him. That made Ward really think. He sent the Beave to his room and said to his wife that he had too much pride. He let it get in the way of being a good father. I thought it was a good story. Many people do have too much pride and refuse to apologize, make amends or even correct mistakes.  That should change don’t you agree?
