Labor Day is a holiday in both the United Stats and Canada. It was originally started to celebrate the union laborers. Eventually, it turned into the end of the summer type of holiday. While I don’t disagree about the labor unions, they seem to have left out a larger group of workers. I realize that the labor unions were important to finally recognizing the importance of value of their daily work. However, there are other groups which should have been included even thouh many of them now have their own unions. The tailors, seamstresses, cobblers, waiters, waitresses, grocery clerks, any and all shop clerks and a variety of other employed individuals should ahve been included Treating the worker fairly and decently, regardless of the job or the title, should always be a priority. For example, I have a relative who was studying a variety of lanuages to become an interpreter. She was working at a coffee shop to supplement her income. She worked in what was considered a safe area in Ireland. I had even lived near there. One day a man came in with a knife demanding all the cash. He walked up to her and held a knife to her throat. It was a terrible event and whatever her pay was clearly was not worth it. She quit, had to go to therapy, and eventually moved back to live near her parents and started a quiet life. When people are being paid, their rates should reflect the times. The smash and grabs occuring in California are frightening to the employees. It is just not worth it for them. Back in what was considered the olden days, people worked for low wages and were forced to stay at their jobs often for long hours without overtime pay. So as the people of North America reflect on this day, they should remember all the individuals that went before them and paved the way for better salaries and benefits, don’t you agree?
