When anyone receives the notice to serve on a jury, they generally cringe. I received one once. I appeared and was interviewed. The judge asked me a few questions and then I told her that basically everyone lies. She was furious and told me to leave. She felt that all government officials told the truth. If that was true there wouldn’t be so many scandals. I left and haven’t been called since. There are various TV shows such as “Andy Griffith,” “The Nanny,” just to name a few that had characters placed on jury duty. In the case of the “Andy Griffith” show one of the most memorable shows was when Aunt Bea had to serve. She was convinced that the man was innocent and the other members of the jury were furtious with her. Finally, through a strong persistence, she found the evidence that proved the man’s innosense and everyone ended up acquitting him. There is an old funny skit with the “George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” in which Gracie is called for jury duty. Right before she went in for her interview, the judge was fed up with all the previous possibilities and informed the head of jury selection that they were choosing the next person. Well, of course, it was Gracie. The first thing she did after they told her she would receive five dollars a day was she took out twenty-five dollars and said she would pay for five days. They re-explained it to her so she put her money back in her purse. Then they began questioning her. Given that it was Gracie nothing made sense to them. Finally, the talked in private and decided she was playing a game to get out of jury duty so they told her to report the following Monday. I loved the skit as this was the real character and she was herself. I wish there had been a follow up skit as I think it would have been hilarious. Have you ever been called for jury duty?
