An attorney I used to work with hated reverse mortgages. He felt they were unjust and people lost money. However, many still are doing reverse mortgages today due to inflation and the high cost of living. Yes you do receive money but at what cost? You are better off selling your home and buying something for cash. Many people have reverse mortgages in California. The pricing is high and so are the taxes. Yet they stay primarily because of the weather and other advantages. The smarter choice would be to find a location near other family with reasonable weather and less expensive housing. Look at how many Hollywood celebrities have left. Many have moved to Florida including Scott Biao and people such as George Clooney and Brad Pitt have homes in France. Of course, George still has his long time home in Lake Como, Italy. Rachel Ray now has a home in Tuscany but continues to keep a small home in New York. Lorraine Bracco redid a home in Silicy but still keeps a home in the northeast. People are making changes as the reverse mortgage market ends up being costly. Often when I administer a trust, a parent may have a reverse mortgage. Frankly, it is not worth it to even try to sell the home but rather let the reverse morgage company repossess it. It truthfully depends upon how much they borrowed and the location of the home. If you are older and thinking about a reverse mortgage consider all your options and do thorough research.
