Recently on Facebook there have been clips from a movie entitled “The Front of the Class” which is about tourette’s syndrome. The actor, James Wolk, portrayed an adult with toruette’s beautifuly. In the movie, he did work briefly in a few elementary schools for his internship. However, when it came time for a full time job he was continually turned down. At one interview with a man probably in his fifties, who completely rejected him for his tourette’s. Of course, it was against the law, but the principal cited other reasons to keep himself out of trouble. His name in the movie is Mr. Cohen. He was called back for a second interview at a different school. There were at least four women there. One was older and she couldn’t cope with him, There was a nice woman with red hair or as we call in Ireland a Ginger. She thought he would do well. She asked him how the children reacted. Mr. Cohen explained that at first when they noticed the noises he made they thought he was strange. Then after he told them the name, they undertood that was part of his condition. Of course, they all wanted to know if it was contagious. Once he explained further that he was born with it and that it was just a physical reaction, they all accepted it and thought he was just a little wierd. The story was written beautifully with Mr. Cohen teaching them much more that the average teacher. A disability should not prevent a person from being hired for a job. If they are qualified and can do the work they should be hired. In my mind it is a form of discrimination such as refusing a person a job because of the color of their hair, an accent, a limp, etc. Don’t you agree?
