Undercover Boss

There is a show in America that is about to start its twelveth season entitled “Undercover Boss.” I have always liked it as CEO’s, Presidents, and top executives go undercover to check on their businesses.  It occurs in a variety of industries such as retail, restaurants, plumbling, technology, hair salons, etc. The undercover boss will become completely disguised with different hair color, a wig, a beard, cheap clothing, tattered shoes, and various  types of make-up so they cannot be recognized. Then a different executive informs the business  that a new employee is starting as a trainee, a replacement, or simply just an additonal person to help out. They show up and act very contrite and appear that they want to learn. Of course, along the way they find out what is really going on. I have seen the undercover boss work in a factory and saw why their products were not selling because the employees were cutting corners or just too lazy to do the work correctly. There have been shows in which a man or woman, although primarily a female, was treated poorly and worked extra hours without extra pay. Many of these individuals had a family or a sick parent they were taking care of. The Undercover Bosses visit various locations to test out each store. Once they have worked five or six days, they return to the corporate headquarters and all the people who were both good and terrible are called in. He or she reviews them one by one and makes changes to all the businesses to insure both a quality work environment and an automatic increase in sales. He or she generally promotes the deserving people, gives them a raise and fires the bad employees.  I also love the restaurant undercover boss shows as they always portray a homeless person trying to get a warm cup of water and any food that might be thrown away. The managers are always terrible to the unfortunate people and there is always one waiter or waitress that does their best to help. One store whose CEO was a former homeless man, after his undercover, fired the manager and then promoted the good waitress. She then asked if a small table could be put aside to help feed the homeless particularly in the cold winter. The CEO heartly agreed. Have you ever seen “Undercover Boss” as I know it is also shown in Europe? Please remember that education is the foundation of life and a good book is a good start for the child in your life. It would also bring joy if you donated a Good Gus book to a sick child in the hospital. “Misplaced Trust” is an interesting book for the older adult or the difficult person on your Christmas list. Hard copies, personally autographed, are available through our website www.goodgusbooks.com along with past blogs for your reading enjoyment.
