Lost Skills

Due to technology, much of the newer generation has lost skills that we as the older people not only mastered but are now learning new ones. For example, the dial phone which became push button was early communication for us with family and friends. I still remember my grandmother’s phone number and the fact I was not allowed to call her between 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. because “I Love Lucy” was on. She simply wouldn’t answer the phone!Young adults and kids today have no clue about those phones because they have their own phones. Very few homes even have a landline any more. Now because of GPS, most people cannot even read a map. I am horrible at directions so I have to memorize everything. Even when I use GPS today, if I don’t have the Irish girl I never find what I am looking for. Except for being forced to use a file system at the library, most adults have no idea how to use a file system. I taught my children when they were young and gave them a small allowance to stuff envelopes and file on Saturdays. I think the sad part about the internet is that children have no clue about encyclopedias and therefore, don’t really expand their knowlede. Do you remember when you had to do a project for school and you would glance through the encycopedia? Along the way you picked up other knowledge just trying to find the section you needed. That is defintely a lost skill of the kids today particularly in expanding their horizons. Do you feel you have lost skills? As the holiday season approaches, does your mind drift off to your lists? Choose the easy way by buying a book from the Good Gus series for the kids on your list or donate a book to a sick child in the hospital. You will bring joy to all the children.
