The day after Christmas is a holiday in many countries. In the UK, Canada and Australia Boxing Day is a national holiday. In Ireland it is St. Stephen’s Day. I never understood and apparently many other people as well what Boxing Day stands for. I truthfully believed it was a boxing challenge from the previous year. Until today, I just didn’t know. If you don’t know either, it is called Boxing Day as people are supposed to box up items from Christmas that they didn’t want, already had or donations to help the needy. It is truly a nice idea. More people should do it. Donating items in good condition is important. Many of the thrift shops resell clothes, dishes, books, etc. to pay their rent and help people. There was at one time, I am not sure if it exists any more, places for people to have a make-over to be able to look presentable to apply for a job. For the men, they had haircuts and shaves. The women had their hair done and both males and females chose clothes that would help them obtain employment. It was a good idea as it helped people regain self respect. As a family, we always donate items we no longer need or use. I once gave away a down jacket as I no longer lived in a cold climate. When I say cold I mean below freezing. I still need to wear silk long underwear from November to at least the end of April in Ireland. Of course, in the summer while I am wearing a light jacket everyone else is wearing shorts and sleeveless shirts! So as you sort out now that Christmas has passed, see what might be donations for Boxing Day.
