Insensitive Words

Have you ever noticed at a wake or funeral the number of insensitive words people say? It is unkind because often the words haunt people forever.  For example, when my grandfather passed people said, “Well he was getting up there. It is too bad he had pneuponia. He died because Kate had passed in March,” and a few more choice insensitive words. I was devastated and yet as a teen I still remember everything they said. When my cousin Jimmy passed I missed his wake and funeral. He passed so suddenly, there just wasn’t any time. I still miss him and think about him frequently. However, I have been to several  wakes and funerals and people say things such as, “This will make you stronger.” How do they know? The pain sometimes is excruciating. Or, they may say, “She lived a good life; it is too bad she had to go so young.” Seriously, I just don’t want to hear it. We all bear grief in different ways. We need to cope on our own without any assistance from anyone else. Then there are the individuals, whether young or older who use insensitive words to criticize a person’s appearance in a backhanded way. It could be a man or a woman. When Elvis first appeared, all the girls loved him and his appearance. The parents and anyone who was an adult moaned, groaned and criticized him. He made a huge change in the music industry. He helped many people achieve success which was previously out of reach for them. There are times when parents use insensitive words. They make remarks that are unkind and inconsiderate to their children. The kids take it to heart and it affects them often for a long time. Do you resent insensitive words?
