The premise of the Good Gus series is always do the right thing. The first paragraph of every story starts off with “He is a good sheriff because he always does the right thing.” It is a lesson that I hope I impart to the young reader. I saw a reel today on Facebook about doing the right thing. A dishelved looking man walked into a sandwhich shop and was trying to ask for a drink. One of the workers knew instantly that he was a diabetic and needed help. He collapsed and she called for an ambulance. While waiting she gave him a sugar drink which is usually what will help if a Type I diabetic in an extreme low blood sugar. The EMT said she saved him as they arrived just in time. Her boss was furious. After they left when she tried to go back inside to work, he blocked her entrance. He told her she didn’t work there any more. She asked why. He explained that the sick man was a filthy dirty bum and she stole from the shop to help him. She asked him, “When is it wrong to do the right thing?” He said she didn’t and slammed and locked the door in her face. She was in shock. When she arrived home her daughter knew instantly that something was wrong. The mother explained and even her daughter didn’t understand. A couple of days later there was a knock at her door. It was the man she had saved. She invited him in and made tea. He was speaking to both the mother and daughter when the mother asked her to go into her room while the grownups talked. The man said he had looked into her background and she had an MBA. He asked her why she was working in an sandwhich shop. She explained she and her husband had a thriving marketing business when he was diagnosed with cancer and passed. She just couldn’t handle things so she took the first job that would hire her. He gave her a card. He told her to appear at the address the next day at nine in the morning. Once she arrived he led her to an office and told her it was hers now. It came with outstanding benefits. She said he didn’t need to do this. He said this was his right thing to doit is a good time to buy an e-book for their tablets.
