Heart Transplant

On December 3, 1967, 53-year-old Louis Washkansky received the first human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. The surgery was performed by Dr. Christaan Barnard. It was goundbreaking surgery. Today it is almost commonplace. What is interesting is that when one person needs a heart transplant, another peson has to pass. There is a movie I saw yesteday that I had seen at least ten years ago or more about this very topic. It was called “A Stranger’s Heart.”It focused around four people. One an older man had type “O” blood and the other three had type “A” which is a common blood type. When the “O” man finally received a heart, he did not make it. One of his friends completely lost it when he passed. A man and woman near the same age, and the third female a bit older all received Transplants. The younger woman and man became friends playing scrabble and exercising together. The older woman wanted to meet the family that saved her life but she regretted it. The younger woman first began going by a school to watch a little girl. The little girl thought she was an angel.. Then the man started hanging about. One day when it was only the woman,  a teacher  walked across the street and began yelling at the woman. When the heart transplant woman explained she realized that she knew the woman who had given her a heart. The man started coming back which was when they figured out they had the hearts of her mother and father. They tried to talk to the grandather but he told them to stay away. She started a book and the man began helping her to finish it. In between they became more than friends and decided to get married. He printed the book and sent it to the grandfather with a wedding invitation. They actually attached the book and the grandfather allowed her to become friends with the couple. It was a really good story but you have to realize that for every heart transplant another person lost a family member. Did you like it? In the Good Gus series I did write a story about a girl in a wheelchair. I felt it was important for all children to be recognized.
