March Twelth is an historic day. If you are wondering why I have at least three reasons. The first event occurred March 12, 1930. Mahatma Gandhi was sixty-six years old when he walked two hundred forty miles in India. He was marching for freedom, dignity and defiance because of a large tax for salt by the United Kingdom. At that time salt was very valuable and needed by everyone in India. His walk inspired others to work for justice including Martin Luther King. Sadly today much food is now taxed which is difficult for everyone. The next event was March 12, 1912 when Juliet Gordon Lowe began the Girl Scouts. It was unique as women were not accepted and could not even vote. She began working with the community, selling cookies, helping people in need and building confidence for all young girls. Today the Girl Scouts are still alive helping to give girls confidence, building strength, and continuing to work on committee projects. Of course, they still sell their cookies to help pay for camping, and helping other community services. The last one was on March 12, 1989 began the start of the world wide web. Now today it laid the foundation which eventually led to the internet. It is quite significant that March twelth led to helping and changing life as we know it today. When you read to the stories from the Good Gus series, it is also is significant that the children know not only the stories but the important events on each March twelth.
