I think friendly competition is good for all ages. It shows how to be a good winner and loser. Often there are children who are never allowed to lose at home so when they are in the world they become a sore loser and frequently mean and nasty. The poor loser is always the worst as they literally have temper tantrums. Then they figure out how to cheat so they can win. In the Good Gus series, book fifteen, “Girls Rule,” there is a small fair in Pecos with a horse race around Pecos River. The race was the last day. There were two teams boys and girls. The girls were Heather and Haley. The boys were sure they would beat the girls and win the blue ribbons. However, the girls won fair and square and Judge Ross passed out ribbons to both girls. The boys were mad and a little sulky but they got over it. I wanted to show two things. The first that most contests are fair and second that the boys didn’t always win. I thought it was important that they didn’t have a temper tantrum as well. When we were young we all knew kids either boys or girls who had a fit when they didn’t win a competition. Even on Facebook in the reels, there are women who compete for a man primarily because he is rich. However the men at some point see their true colors and realize that not only did they want to win but went about it in an unfair way. Do yu know anyone who is not fair in a competition?
