Check Washing

When I was young, check washing was very popular. Back then as soon as you obtained a job, you opened a checking account. There was no internet so you had to go into the bank not only to open it but for anything else. Credit cards were limited so most people paid by check. It was terrible when someone stole your checks as it took a great deal of work to fix. Not to mention the overdraft fees were extensive. Well, it is back again. Most of us pay bills online but there are a few bills even I pay by check. The American Postal System is intercepting more than one billion annually in stolen checks and money orders. The scammers can use household supplies to modify the checks and then deposit them in banks under false identities. It’s brilliant but extremely wrong. How do they do it? They use nail polish remover or rubbing alcohol. They change the payee and the amount. Then they cash it and escape with their stolen money. The fact that it is popular now is really surprising. Almost every company that sends a bill offers online payments and even the ability to use PayPal. Has this ever happned to you? Checks were invented in the 9th century in Islam as a method of transferring money. They were available during the Good Gus era but I never felt they were relavent to any stories.
