Most individuals who work in restaurants as waiters or waitressess receive additional compensation through tips. This is primarily a tradition in the United States. In many of the states the minimum wage is extremely low and the workers count on tips. Some diners tip well others either poorly or skip it altogether. When I was young my friend who was studying to become a nurse earned severy-five cents on hour in a muffin shop. At that time the minimum wage was one dollar twenty-five cents an hour. Many years ago when my son was doing aditional schooling in Tennessee, the minimum wage for a restaurant was eighty-seven cents . So, of course, tips were important. Over the years as minimum wages increased in various states, so did the tips. Today I saw an article about a manager who was too greedy. On her first day she gathered all the staff and told them no more tips until they did a better job. One of the employees asked where were the tips going to go. She claimed whe would keep them safe. Many of the workers were angry and unhappy but also didn’t wish to lose their jobs. One person asked about the owner and she said if they told on her they would be fired. Her tone was nasty. Everyday the manager’s attitude and tone became worse. No one could stand it. One of the emloyees was the owners daughter but no one knew that. She finally told her dad and he was furious. He secretly installed cameras all the while the manager becoming bolder and acting as if she owned the place. The dad finally confronted her and that was the end of her. How do you feel about tips? I did not include tips in the Good Gus series.
