Rabies

Rabies is becoming rampid again. When my son was young, all of a sudden there was a rabid possum out in front of his bedroom window. He didn’t know what to do. We ended up calling the sheriff as it was a small town who came out and had to figure out how to collect it. The worst part of this was that he would never sleep in his room again. I also wrote a story in the Good Gus series about rabies. It is book twenty-seven entitled “Toby Saves the Day.” One day as Judge Ross was riding into town, he saw an animal too big to be a dog moseying along the trail. As he approached it he realized it was a baby elephant that sure looked hungry. He had some bread crumbs so he fed them to him as they headed into town. By the time they arrived, Sheriff Gus saw them as he was sitting on a rocker on his porch. He realized that the baby must be lost. All the children were excited and of course they liked him so much so they named him Toby. The sheriff wrote to the zoo the next day and the children played with him and of course, overfed him. One day as all the children were playing in town as it was the last day of school and a big celebration, there was an animal drifing towards Pecos. Miss Patty didn’t like the looks of him and made the children back up. One of the kids went’s to the sheriff’s office to tell him. As the animal kept approaching Toby began sounding his trumpet. He crashed into a fence and began swinging his trunk back and forth until Ray and Gus arrived and crated him. They knew instantly that he had rabies. Have you ever seen a rabid animal?
