When I was young we were constantly tested for TB a/k/a tuberculous. Not only that if you applied for job that you were in contact with peopple, you had to be tested. I worked in a hospital as a Dietary Aide which meant I handled food everyday, served the meals to the patients and helped them choose the foods they would want to eat. Of course, if a person had TB at that time they were sent away to a sanitarium. A neighbor down the street from where I used to live had two sons. As soon as the first son turned eighteen, he enlisted in the military. He was stationed in the southern part of the United States. At that time, girls could marry with their parents permission before they turned eighteen. When the son returned he came with a bride who was my age. I was fifteen and so was she. I felt like a kid next to her. They rented the lowerer apartment of a neighbor’s two story house. It wasn’t long before she had to leave as she had TB and was sent off to Kentucky. It was over six months before she returned. Once she was cured they of course had a baby and eventually moved as he was in the military. Right now the United States is experiencing the largest outbreak of TB. It is currenly in Kansas in large numbers. It took a long time to erradicate it here in the states. The government originally narrowed it down to immigrants from various countries. Before people were able to enter the United States they had to be tested for a variety of condiions. Now that TB is back it may spread to other states. I guess we will have to wait and see. How do you feel now that TB is back?
