St. Patrick’s Day is a big day for all Irish. It is a huge celebration in Ireland with parades, food and a variety of entertainment. They are, however, keeping the off license or liquor stores closed until 4:00 p.m.to reduce drinking. I don’t think it will work. On St. Paddy’s Day, when I lived in Ireland, I would be sound asleep when I would be woken up by a man walking home, drunk, singing. When I lived there with my son, his friends all came over for dinner. A grand time was had by all. In America, there are still parades and corned beef starts selling in the groceries in February. Of course, when I was growing up everyone came to my grandparents’ house. Naturally we had the boiled dinner. I always sat next to my grandfather because the aunts would give me everything I didn’t like. That included the corned beef, cabbage, turnips, and parsnips. I was okay with the carrots and potatoes. One of the reasons I sat next to him was to quietly slip off all the foods I didn’t like onto his plate. What is funny is that today my daughter said to me since you have come to live with me I eat potatoes almost everyday! Legend has it that St. Patrick drove all the snakes away. That is partly true as he went head to head with a demon, his reptiles and his snakes. He killed the demon and the reptiles and snakes went into the lake. Science claims that there are no snakes as Ireland never experinced the Ice Age. Either way it is a joy. Happy St. Patrick’s Day. In the Good Gus stories, partly because I am Irish, we have a few characters who crossed the Atlantic on the boat and took the train to Pecos. There are many ethnicities in the Good Gus series which I believe is important for all children. See if your children like the stories as they are easy to download.
