Years ago my late husband said that alligators were going to travel out of the swamps and head north. Today on social media residents in Florida have to be careful in their neighborhoods. They are indeed traveling sometimes resting on patios or porches. They are extremely dangerous. When I lived in Flordia, the alligators ate ducks, small dogs and cats. There was a swamp behind our house where I walked my dogs everyday. I didn’t understand then, but an alligator would follow me with my dogs as I walked around the swamp. It never came out of the water but it was creepy. Now they are moving to Georgia and the Carolinas across the states to Louisiana and Texas. Florida, I believe, has the largest population. They look mean. There was an old episode on “Leave it to Beaver” in which Wally and the Beave brought home an alligator. They hid it in the basement which was unusual because they lived in California. One day their mother went downstairs and the alligator frightened her to death. When Ward, the dad and husband came home he was really shocked. Later after the boys arrived, he had a long chat with them. He made them give the alligator to a man who had a type of zoo with different animals that were well fenced in. The boys did not realize how large the alligator could grow until they went to the zoo. Years ago New Yorkers would go to Florida for a winter holiday and bring home a baby alligator. When it became too big, they flushed it down the toilet. Even today, there are still large alligators in the New York sewers. I hope this blog didn’t make you feel uncomfortable. In the Good Gus series there are no alligators. There were cattle and later stories have an elephant, racoons, and a few other animals to liven up the stories.
