Dignity

It seems as life gets worse the people who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect are treated poorly instead. Many years ago I worked as a secretary for a medical company. The Vice President very specifically studied the aging process in college. I had to attend many seminars and take general notes. Their main goal was that all older people be treated with dignity and respect. For example, if a person was of a specific ethnicity that drank wine or beer with their meal, he believed that they should continue to do so. They had activity directors at all facilities which was then called rest homes. It was more about what a person did prior to retirement and what their skills might be. They would have craft fairs that would raise money for the residents so that they could continue to feel useful and have a small income. However, once a new governor was elected everything not only changed but stopped permanently. They went back to sitting in a chair looking out the window. Rough way for the last days of your life. I saw a video about a older woman who was stuck in one of those homes. He son rarely visited her. When she was about to pass, he showed up and asked what he could do. She had a list that included better food on a consistent basis, air conditioning, heat, TV’s that work, etc. for the residents in the home. She had lived her last few years in misery but she wanted others not to suffer as she had. Wherever we go now, whether it is on the news, in Facebook, or actually witnessing it, people tend to be rude to older people. These are the people who paved the way for the younger generation. The same individuals who paid taxes, found better ways to live, invented many products, improved food production, vehicles, etc. They do not deserve this. In the Good Gus series regardless of age everyone was treated with dignity and respect. The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
