Forced Retirement

Many individuals are very upset over forced retirement.  Due to the high cost of living and inflation they can ill afford to quit. The worst part is if they are forced to retire they then have to find a job to supplement their income.  Have you ever noticed the number of older people working now in retail, at casinos, and even groceries?  They simply cannot get by financially.  Not to mention, here in the states, social security just doesn’t go that far.  Many people saved, invested, purchased a home and put aside money to enjoy what they call their golden years.  However, as life comes along they often end up with very little.  A family member may have needed medical help or possibly even themselves.  They may have had a great investment that suddenly dropped.  There are so many reasons why.  I saw an article today about a woman who was in forced retirement.  She is now suing. She was fired for refusingg to quit at age sixty-five. She worked at that company for over twenty years. She is now suing them for age discrimination.  The sad part is that there are a variety of types of discrimination.  Age is just part of a long list.  Many companies have become wiser and hired older people for a number of reasons.  First of all they are experienced and well versed in whatever position the business needs assistance in. Next they actually show up, work all day and do the job.  Althugh lately the forced to work in a building is becoming a huge issue.  Even if people work at home they do the job and are very productive.  The commuting to work no longer has the appeal for a higher salary.  With the cost of petrol, many people would rather work at home.  Either way, the older workers do the best job they can and have the experience and qualifications. In the movie, “The Intern” Robert DiNero is a severty year old man who was retired.  At first no one took him seriously because of his age. However, it wasn’t too long before the employees and the CEO Anne Hathaway realized that he was a asset to the company.  His abilities and skills literally shined.  Anyone who has read my blog know that any type of discrimination is not part of who I am. After all, I am an older woman. How do you feel about forced retirement? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
