Sugarcoat

Have you ever noticed in life how much of what we read, see and hear is sugarcoated? I noticed on an episode from “Boston Legal,” in the closing by Alan Shore. His argument was about how everything in life is sugarcoated.  It is actually true. Everybody lies.  It’s a well known habit of politicans. It is their favorite. If the statistics are bad for crime, taxes, government assistance, etc. they change the way they speak. For example, crime might be at an all time high. What is said instead? Our crime rate is changing and you will be pleased with the new stats when they are released.  That was like saying eating candy 24/7 will not affect your health. They might also say that even though they are raising taxes that there are new government programs that will benefit everyone never including the rise in taxes. This also occurs in the workplace. I saw a diferent episode on “Boston Legal” where a company owner fired a woman who had been working for him for about one year. They were discussing politics. She said she voted for McCain and he said she was stupid. Within one hour he fired her. Then when they went to court his attorney sugarcoated his defense.  He said that it was not her political views and she was an at will employee. The owner’s attorney said that the woman was stupid but claimed it was due to her work performance.  The “Boston Legal” attorney said that she had been fine for one year so what changed on the day she discussed politics with her boss who had in fact brought up the topic. Basically, the other side sugarcoated again and said she was at will and was stupid. It sounds nuts doesn’t it? When someone is about to give bad news they do always try to sugarcoat it.  It doesn’t always work out. How do you feel about sugarcoated?
