Hobbies

Many people have hobbies. Often as children we tried different things that looked appealing such as stamp collecting,  saving postcards from foreign countries, rocks, books, etc. We thought it was a good idea at the time and so we pursued it. In the Good Gus series the children did dig for dinosaur bones. In book twenty-five, “Did Dinosaurs Roam Pecos?” Miss Patty took all the children along with Sheriff Gus to a dry creek so that they could dig for fossils. Katie came along in her wheelchair and participated using a rake. When she became tired, she took a break and her friend, Rose, sat with her. All of a sudden they heard a hissing sound and saw a snake. All digging stopped so that Sheriff Gus could save Katie. Needless to say, I didn’t write any more books about possible hobbies. In some TV shows there have been mysteries about stamp collectors and the lost of their unique stamps. They often led to a myriad of events and circmstances. Hobbies can also include horseback riding, stock car racing, box car racing, and a variety of crafts. In many countries, people make quilts and have groups who knit or sew together. Cooking can even be a hobby. That is probably how many of the famous chefs actually started. Both my children learned to cook from a young age and now my granddaughter is doing the same. For me, cooking is a way of life. I started learning how to make Irish Bread by the time I was four. I had a family member that made Boston baked beans every Saturday. Needless to say not my favourite. What do you like to do? Don’t forget reading is a great hobby and a book from the Good Gus series is an ideal way to start a child on a new hobby. Remember “Misplaced Trust” is an interesting book for the adults on your Christmas list. As you see the Angel Trees, donations at churches, hospitals and special care facilities, I hope you will donate one of my books to bring joy into a child or adult’s life.
