Human Resources

There was an article today about the individuals who are in the human resources position. Many years ago my late husband and I had a contract engineering business. Prior to that I was what was called then a headhunter. In other words, I placed skilled individuals in permanent jobs. What intrigued me about headhunting was that I would often receive CV’s or resumes for positions these same individuals had applied for through human resources. Whomever the individual was, they simply couldn’t be bothered to contact the manager about the applicant. What I did was simple, I found out who the manager was and contacted him. Then I forwarded the CV or resume. Almost one hundred percent of the time the manager would be thrilled with the applicant and go down to humand resources demanding I be contacted so the applicant could be interviewed. What was even worse, was that these individuals didn’t even realize the qualified person they had rejected! In contract engineering I was basically human resources. I found individuals qualified for various positions. I spoke to them, fixed up their paperwork, and again they were hired. I once found a man who had very specific qualifications that no one could find. Not only was he placed, but at a high rate at the time. My late husband was shocked. Today, human resources has changed. They often hire individuals based on looks first qualifications second. Sometimes the qualifications don’t seem to matter. In the article, a man would always stop to fill his water bottle before driving home for his long commute. He was told to stop stealing by human resources, Can you imagine? Just one more. This one is priceless. A man was written up for collecting the trash claiming he was stealing. It was his job at the end of the day. Once he stopped, the following month, the human resources person had a fit. For two years the employee had been recycling.  Not only was there no trash bill but they received fifteen hundred dollars for all the work. Now they had to pay a large trash bill. I think many human resource people believe that they have all the power, when in reality they do not, don’t you agree?
