Years ago there was a college scandal in California regarding applicants. The admissions office had a few individuals who were taking bribes to allow certain celebrities children acceptance into the college. It was a shame as the students needed help with just as many issues as their parents. Today I was watching a show about the same topic except for young children. A man had an agency that specialized in preparing wealthy children for acceptance in top elementary schools and all the way into top universities. The agency was collecting an obscene amount of money for each student. In fact it was easily a sum that would cover the cost of a large home. In this story there was a man who had been promoted at an elementary academy who absolutely refused any and all applicants for the agency because he hated the man who ran it. Of course, this lead to a confrontation. The point was that this still exists today. All children should be based on their on merits as applicants not bribery. The fact that this exists is an outrage. I constantly write about being fair and it is part of all the Good Gus series books. In one of my books, “Girls Rule.” the boys and girls have a race around Pecos River. The girls won but no one was angry as it was a fair race. I also wanted to point out that equality is important regardless of gender. In the school in Pecos, Miss Patty taught everyone according to their age and skills. In book twenty-two, “The Field Trip,” a new family was introduced to Pecos. I included this theme as I wanted everyone to feel at home and welcome. One of the new childre was in a wheelchair. I used this to show that all children should be treated fairly and in this book and all future stories the new character, Katie, was treated fairly. I think that it is important that regardless of who you are all people should be treated fairly including applicants to schools, don’t you agree? So far in the Good Gus series I only have five books illustrated although I have written 33. I hope you will consider an e-book from the series for the child or children in your life.
