I just read that Nike is struggling financially. They hope to use Kim Kardashian to increase sales. Years ago when my daughter was studying in college, I often would read parts of her textbooks. At that time, which was in the early 2000’s, the school had an article about Nike in the textbook that she was required to read and write a paper on. It was an adverse article about Nike overpaying famous athletes millions while not even paying a fair wage to the workers they were using in third world countires. They were not even paying them a living wage at that time. I guess sometimes Karma comes back in different forms. Many individuals complained about Nike at the time and even boycotted them. There were apparently lively discussions in her class about this topic. At that time, many of the students decided to boycott Nike and went home to tell their families and friends. I am never quite sure about the lack of justice in the world. When a company such as Nike was making millions, they could have easily paid their workers a living wage. The fact that the workers worked extra long days also didn’t give them a chance for a second income to help cope with their daily expenses. People complain and fight for living wages in other civilized countries. How do you feel about individuals being paid a living wage in all countries? When I wrote the Good Gus series my thoughts were about fairness in all areas of life. I felt it was important that children learn anywhere and everywhere about doing the right thing and always being fair. Today when I awoke there was snow which is not a normal occurance. All I could think of was all the children at home and instead of playing video games or TV, reading a story from the Good Gus series. As a parent, the importance of reading “Misplaced Trust” for the financial protection of your family should also be a priority on your list.
