In the 1960’s and 1970’s using the telephone for long disstance was pracitically prohibited. When I moved from my grandparents to live with different relatives, I would call my grandmother everyday except between ten to ten thirty in the morning. That was her time for “I Love Lucy.” I was allowed to speak to her after as long as I didn’t stay on too long. Other family members conversations such as my cousin Theresa and I would always get together before Christmas and listen to the Beatles on a record player. I could talk to the friend I had next door because she was on the same party line. It was a welcome change when families started switching to a private line. It cost slightly more but it was worth it. When I was single I had a princess telephone with a private line. It was worth it. After I was married I would call my father-in-law as I was very fond of him. As long distance calls were still expensive, he would say he was fine and then hang up. It was always disappointing as I just wanted to use the telephone to talk for a few minutes. Life using a telephone has changd so much today. Now the phone has free long distance in all of the country in America and it is used for games, checking your email, banking and Facetime. To me Facetime is always the best to speak to family, don’t you agree?
