Corporal punishment within the school system, in my opinion, should not exist. When I was young, my nextdoor neighbor had a brother who married a lovely woman. She told my friend and me that when she was in school and wrote with her left hand, the teacher hit her hand with a ruler. So every time she tried to write with her left hand, the teacher basically smacked her hand. Even as a young girl I was in shock. When my family moved to Texas in the 1970’s corporal punishment was still in existence. My stepson was in machine shop and he touched something he wasn’t supposed to. He was spanked. It was a new experience to him as he had never been hit by an adult. Again I was overwhelmed but I told him that whatever he did to never do it again. As a result he was more careful. I will say today, though, he still touches everything. When I was young corporal punishment existed in many families. I knew a family whose father was beaten because his father had been killed in World War I. The reason he was hit was that his mother had to work to support them. I met her and she was not a nice person. As a result, when the father had a bad day, he would handcuff to a pipe in the basement one of his sons which was the one his mother favored, and take off his shirt and beat him on his bare back with a belt. It was a small neighborhood but you could still hear the screams. Sadly, even today, people eventually caught beating, starving and isolating their children now go to jail. That is why I hate corporal punishment, do you? There is no punishment in any Good Gus story as I don’t believe in it. Yes the characters did do something wrong but something always happened to make them realize that they made a mistake.
