Close Friends

When we were young we played with the kids in the neighborhood and we thought they were our close friends. One or two were probably our best friends. As we grew the friends changed. Sometimes we hung out with groups with only one close or best friend. Eventually we all went our separate ways and before long many of us had new best friends. Some of us married and our husbands became our best friend. I always kept in touch with my next door neighbor even though we went our separate ways. We saw each other now and again. One day she called me to say she had breast cancer. She had been a smoker. She did marry and have a son who was her pride and joy. Once I found out she was sick I called her everyday until she couldn’t talk any more. Then I would call her husband a few times a week just to check. Finally, one day he called me on August 19 and I knew. She was very tall and I still am short. We were friends for many years which is a good memory. A few years ago  a survey asked people how many close friends they had. In 1990  the results were 33% of the people said they had ten friends. Today the number has dropped to thirteen percent. This might make you understand why so many people are lonely and there are so many groups for online dating, etc. How many close friends do you have now? In the Good Gus series mostly siblings were close friends. However, the families that only had one child their child would still be friends with other boys and girls of families. One of the reasons that the stories are so interesting to children is that they are kind to each other, play with everyone and the underlying kindness that the young reader reads without realizing it.
