In many of the old TV shows the women performed traditional roles. Many of the women were housewives. The single women worked at jobs until they married. There were some women who were supported by the families and performed traditional roles. For example, Aunt Bea in the ‘Andy Griffith Show’ was the basic housekeeper. She cooked, cleaned, tended to the garden and did the weekly shopping. Not until late in the series did she even learn how to drive. In the Brady Bunch, Carol Brady, the mum, was a traditional housewife but with a housekeeper. That was probably every woman’s dream. In ‘My Three Sons’ Bub who was their grandfather on their deceased mother’s side, was the houskeeper. He cooked, clean, ironed, did laundry, etc. Back then it was shocking to see a man do those chores. I put the show on for our new puppies who like it and sometimes actually watch it. I astually stopped in my tracks when I saw Bub ironing men’s clothes. After he left they had Uncle Charley who was still a housekeeper. Many women, including me, cooked, cleaned, did laundry, ironed and worked. I was fortunate that even before my daughter was born I worked at home. It was an easy adjustment although I will admit I may have a clean house but I always have a messy desk. If any woman is reading this blog do you or did you have a traditional role? In the Good Gus series there really was no such thing as traditional roles. Mary, from Mary’s Cafe’, worked, took care of her husband who also worked, their twin boys, and tended to their garden. I wanted children to read that mothers often have other responsibilities to keep a family going. The stories are an excellent read for the young reader full of excitement and always a happy ending. “Misplaced Trust” does not have a dull chapter. It is a book that will make you stop and think.
