Running Out of Gas/Petrol

For many individuals running out of gas/petrol doesn’t occur often particularly now that there are so many electric cars. Years ago, gas stations also known as petrol stations had set hours and were not open 24/7. In addition, when you went to fill up your tank they did the filling and cleaned your front windshield. As I result, it was years before I had any idea how to fill up my tank.  I still sometimes have trouble today. Most of the stations closed between five and seven in the evening and often were not even open on Sundays. Also, the shops and groceries closed at early times as well so if you broke down you were truly out of luck. As there were no cell phones either, your best chance for obtaining help was with a phone booth providing you had the change. One week-day evening, my late husband and I went out after work to visit friends. They were away from where we lived, and we took the freeway. We had a nice time and headed home around nine thirty in the evening.  Suddenly, my late husband began to notice the register on the amount of petrol dropping rather rapidly.  He had forgotten to fill the tank before we left.It was in the summer, so the weather was pleasant in case we broke down. At that time, the road memberships existed but he had never thought about becoming a member. Now, of course, there are memberships with insurance both in the states and Europe. As the meter kept dropping I became worried. By this time it was approaching ten o’clock and I just didn’t want to be stranded. Finally, he had a brilliant idea. He remembered a city he worked in previously had many gas/petrol stations. He found an exit with hills that went down. He  began looking for a station. As we cruised down the first hill there was one on the right. He put the car in neutral because back then most cars were standard shift. This happened to be my 1960 Chevy Impala convertible. As he rolled into the first station he stopped in front of a pump. He opened the tank and took the handle and found there were a few drips of gas/petrol. He put it in and then coasted to the next two pumps. Then he turned the car around and did it all over again with the other three pumps.Slowly, the meter began to move as to the amount of gas/petrol available. There was another station that he could coast to not too far down the street. He did this three more times until we had enough gas/petrol to make it home.It was the last time he forgot to fill the tank! Has this ever happened to you? In the Good Gus series cars weren’t quite available. It was horses with buggies. An e-book is a great choice until the weather improves. “Misplaced Trust,” a book about greed and true crime, has nothing to do with running out of gas/petrol. Give an e-book a read.. You might like it. Visit the site and download an e-book. The books are available in e-book from the sites www.goodgusbooks.com and www.misplacedtrust.com. “Misplaced Trust” has a five-star rating on Amazon. It is about true crime and greed.
