Robots are coming to a retailer near you! I know they started in the UK at McDonald’s and no one liked them. Kroger, a grocery in the United States, announced today that they are switching to robots for tasks people do not like to do such as washing floors, inventory, cleaning up, etc. The word is that other retailers will follow such as Walmart and Target. My first thought is what is the cost comparison with a human versus a robot. It may be cost effective over time. The robots in McDonald’s were serving people behind the counter. I don’t go to any fast food chains but I think I would find it disturbing. I would prefer to see a friendly face of a real person. It is also putting humans out of work. Using them to diffuse bombs, going into dangerous situations is acceptable just not acting like people. They do have the robot vacuums now but unless you live in a home with no children or pets and a great deal of open space, they are not that useful. All of this reminds me of the “Jetsons.” Of course that was a cartoon and no one ever believed it would become real. I guess the creators and authors were ahead of their time. I know that there are robots than be assembled to use as toys. The world is changing dramatically and apparently we have to change with it. I hope that new jobs are developed for the people who will become redundant. How do you feel about robots? The Good Gus Series is available online at Kindle, Nook and Waterstones.
