Do you feel your family, workmates and friends appreciate you? It is an interesting question. Many of the older readers and probably several of the middle aged and younger readers have always cooked, cleaned and taken care of their families with little assistance from their husbands, partners, or even roommates. I learned how to cook and clean when I was three years old. I even learned how to do laurndy by the time I was five. My grandmother had an old wringer washer. I hated it. The worst part was that I had to hang the clothes out and in cold weather they froze. Everyone appreciated her and her cooking. Often Saturdays were the day that various family memebers appeared so we always cooked a huge meal. During the Depression she was so well loved and appreciated people would bring their food vouchers so that they could eat from her table. Today fast food also known as take away is so popular it makes me wonder if people who cook are appreciated. I taught both of my children to cook when they were three. My daughter much prefers my cooking although she is actually a good cook. My son could be a chef. When my son and I lived in Ireland our home was the go to place. His friends appreiated both of our cooking and it was amost a daily occurance that we had dinner guests provided my son didn’t work too late. Over the holidays my daughter asked me to bake items for various vendors. I continually bake items for her mechanic as he charges a fair price and will speed up if she drops off a few muffins. Today I finally gave the postal lady a mini banana bread and a couple of apple muffins. She told me she really appreciated them. She had been on holiday so I had ended up putting her gift of appreciation in the freezer. Many of my relatives were civil servants and did not receive the same rates of pay of today. My family always gave monetary gifts but I have found the home baked goods are truly welcome and enjoyed. People need to know that we are grateful for the things that they do and not just at the holiday season. I will probably bake again around Easter.
