Good Listener

How many people do you know are actually a good listener? Most of the time people do not pay attention.  They seem to half listen. Our children will pick up very quickly if we are not a good listener. It was important when our young children spoke to us that we paid attention.  Those were their learning years and it was always extremely important to be a good listener. As they grew we really needed to know and understand what was going on so that as they became teens they did not get into trouble.  It was so easy to lie and pretend that as parents we often found out too late. In today’s world it is rare that people actually listen and pay attention. I have to read so much for work that my daughter tends to become upset with me if I skim an email or text. In dating is when people really focus on conversations.  They want to learn everything about the other person to see if they are compatible. As time progresses they gradually pay less attention right up until the time the relationship ends.  Then they are really listening. Many relationships end simply because the other person is not a good listener. They don’t pay attention except on a limited basis.  So many people are caught up in their phones that you almost don’t want to speak to them.  Their focus lies in texting and playing games so they claim they are listening but they really are not. I find it rude and annoying. The art of conversation is slowly disappearing as people are so wrapped up in their phones.  With my children we had Sunday dinner.  It could have been food from the grill, burgers made by their father, etc. it just didn’t matter.  We ate together and spoke to one another.  Do you find that people are no longer a good listener?
