“Listen to Me” is a phrase that most of us dislike. Whomever is making that statement is basically saying that whatever our thoughts are do not matter. Only theirs are relavent and correct. Not always I regret to say. Parents start with their children demanding they pay attention and do what they are told. The commanding doesn’t always succeed. Children just as adults have a mind of their own. They have their own thoughts, ideas and opinions. We all start forming our own thoughts at an early age. Unfortunately, most parents not only do not recognize them but ignore them completely. Stop and think. What if you had a child like Sheldon Cooper from “Young Sheldon?” He developed so many ideas at an early age that whatever his parents said didn’t actually matter. He was so smart that they had to learn how to cope with him. There are probably many families who have this same issue. The important part about Sheldon was that he was a reader. It is not that common in our world today. Video games have taken over. I bought so many books for my children when they were young that when a church was starting a daycare years ago, I gave enough books to fill all of their bookshelves. There are still a number of books left for my grandchildren to read as they gow. It is nice for them to read books that their parents read. But, sadly in this era, children ignore their parents as they are so focused on technology. The words “Listen to me” literally fall on ears that are not even paying attention. The old let’s have a conversation seems to be lost. Playing the games is far more important. In the movie, “The Blindside,” Michael spends his first Thanksgiving with the Tuohy family. Everyone, except the mother, grabbed their food and they all sat in front of the Tv watching football games. Suddenly, Leigh Ann noticed Michael sitting at the dining room table alone. She clicked off all the games and everyone sat at the table eating and conversing. That is the way it should be with everyone talking and listening to each other, don’t you agree?
