There are individuals who will interpret everything by exact words only. They are the same individuals who always speak in a very precise manner. They never are interested in what you may have meant. We often speak that way because we are not speaking exact words. A good example is an incident in “The Brady Bunch.” Peter while talking about what a great driver Greg was when he accidentally told on him. He had to hit the brakes to avoid hitting another car as he was too busy looking at an album cover. While Peter was bragging Greg was getting into trouble. The dad grounded him for one week. He was not pleased because he had promised to take a girl to a concert that Friday evening. He rode his bike all the way to purchase the tickets at one spot but they were sold out. He began asking his friends if they could help. One boy said he had a cold but Greg could come over and borrow his car. A few days later his mother met the sick boy’s mother at the grocery and she asked if their car was repaired. It took a few but she figured out that Greg had borrowed their car. She was livid when she told the dad who promptly called him on the carpet. Greg pointed out that his exact words were that he was grounded for the family car. The dad replied that he knew what he had meant. From that minute forward he had to follow all the exact words which ended up with him not going to the concert and doing the dishes for his sister close to midnight. Once the week was over he asked to go back to the old way. In the Good Gus series Bad Bart said his exact words for chocolate ice cream but ended up with an ice cream sundae which was just as good.
